The Foundation for Children with Atypical HUS

Hi members:

During three years my little son have had a high blood preasure controled with minoxidil, trandate, captopril and adalar retard. sudennly one day his blood preasure has begining to low, Is it a miracle ? My son do not have any kidney because doctorsa takenn off as a consequence the high blood preasure suffer to have ahus. Anybody has success the same case like my son? My family are so happy to see Jose Monfort with a control preasure but sometimes I am scared to low blood because i do not sometimes what can I do. His heart is better since this change. He is in hemodyalisis on line since 6 month ago, and three years in another kind of hemodyalisis. Maybe is it on line the change in the blood preasure?

thanks

Nathan's blood pressure improved after changing from peritoneal dialysis to hemo also. He really hasn't had blood pressures low enough to worry me, but I do know some of the other kids, (not aHUS), on hemo have trouble with low blood pressures. Sometimes this is a result of having too much fluid removed...when Nathan's blood pressure gets below 106 systolic, he feels really bad when he's being dialyzed and a few hours after. But if it goes low, even around 100 systolic when we are at home, you know like the off day, he's fine. It's confusing sometimes.
Alyssa's blood pressure was so high when she first came down with A-HUS that she went into seizures from it. She was on about 12 different medications back then (1 1/2 years ago). The docs were considering removing her kidneys to try to control the blood pressure. Now she is down to 2-3 meds and her blood pressure is often low. I don't know why this is either but my guess is that the kidney is exerting less and less control of the blood pressure due to increased thickening, etc. of the organ and thrombosis. Just a layman's guess however but I am not viewing it as a good thing even though it has made our life easier for now.

My bp was extremly high when i first started HD but over time it has come down. I am now only on one blood pressure tablet when i used to be on four. Im not sure if its as my body has got used to the machine, i do dialyse a little more now so that has helped and i probably drink a little less which definatley helps. Hope your sons BP stays stable

Hugs

The Foundation for Children with Atypical HUS encourages patients and investigators to share information and explore options/resources as we work together to gain insight into this rare complement disorder. By increasing contact opportunities with researchers and medical personnel interested in helping the aHUS community, our stories foster a better understanding of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Sharing information, inspiration and support for one another, we seek to gather together people and knowledge as we strive to improve the lives of patients and families dealing with a diagnosis of aHUS.

Did you know...

CFH (Serum Complement Factor H) is a regulatory protein. The secreted protein product of CFH consists of 20 repetitive units named "short consensus repeats" or SCRs (each approximately 60 amino acids). In patients with aHUS the last 5 "pearls" in the twenty pearl strand protein, SCR16 - SCR20, should bind to protect cells but do not- they are defective in one or more of the last 5 SCR locations. If they cannot bind or stick to the kidney to protect that tissue, the platelets clump into clots that affect the glomeruli of the kidney -potentially causing acute renal failure.

It is estimated that there are about 300 cases of aHUS in the U.S., and it is most common with young children. The condition is life threatening and either can be chronic or can recur at intervals.
